In the production of vowel sounds there is no contact or near contact of articulators because vowels are sounds in which we find no obstructions to escape the air from the mouth. Vowel sounds look more difficult to difficult as compared to consonants sounds. Vowel; sounds look more difficult to describe as compared to consonant
Parameters of vowels
1)The Height of the Tongue:
This parameter gives us the categories of close, half close half open and open vowel sounds, Tongue position is described using two criteria: the height (how high is the tongue)_ and the part of the tongue is involved in the production of sound.
2)Position of lip
The parameter gives us the categories of spread and rounded vowel sounds.
3)General area of the mouth
This parameter gives us the categories of spread and rounded vowel sound
In the description of pure vowel sound al the areas of mouth namely front central and back are used. here we shall describe pure vowel sounds in three of mouth.
1)Front Vowel Sound
in the front area English has four vowel sounds. All are made with spread lips.
i. Close Front Spread Vowel:
First of all there close frond spread vowel. It is found in words such as "beat" or "feast". This word "feast" is translated as / fi:st /
ii. Lowered and centralized close spread vowel:
this is the more open and more central close front vowel .it id found in such words bit which is translates as /bIt/
iii. Mid front Spread vowel:
English has no vowel as precisely either the half close and the half open position, but one mid way between the two. This is usually described mid frond spread vowel. it is found in words such as bet, lest etc. it is symbolized by /e/ which is the international phonetic alphabet symbol for a half close front spread vowel.
iv. Open Front Spread vowel:
The English spread vowel in the open area but it is not completely open. it is found such as bet, cat.
2.Back vowel sound:
In the back area of mouth we can recognize five vowels in English four are made with rounded lips and one with spread lip.
Five vowels in the back area of mouth as described as under.
i. Close Back Rounded Vowel:
This vowel falls in the close back area, it is found in words like "boot", "tool". The word tool is transcribed as /tu:l./
ii. Lowered and centralized close back rounded vowel:
This vowel is the more open and more central variety. It is found in word like "book", "good". Good is translated by /gud/.
iii. Mid back rounded vowel:
As in the case of front vowel English has no vowel at precisely half close and half open back position. Therefore There is one vowel somewhere between the two probably near to half open and half close.
iv. Open back rounded vowel:
Open back rounded vowel is one of the two vowel sounds, which are found in the open back area of mouth. This open back rounded vowel is not completely open but somewhere between half and open.it is found like hot and got.
v. Open Back spread Vowel:
Open back spread vowel is one of the two vowel sounds which are found in the open back area of the mouth. it tends towards the central position.
3. Central Vowels:
Now we come to the final group of the pure vowels. this group of the vowel sound is made in the central part of the mouth. there are three vowels produced in this area in English. They are all made with spread lips.
There are three vowels are as under:
i. Open central spread vowel:
One if the central vowel in the open area but infect, it is somewhere in between half open and open. it is portrayed as an open central spread vowel. It is found in words like "but", "same".
ii. Mid central spread vowel:
Mid central vowel in English is placed mid way between half close and half open. it is found in words like "bird", "girl".
iii. Mid central spread vowel:
This central vowel sound is also called mid central spread vowel because it is also found between half open and close area of the mouth. It is found in words like "admit", "ago".
